The band played its first gig in a social club in leeds in ’96 without an agreed band name. The band left a sign out for a friend so they could find where they were playing, which read ‘Gomez in here’. People saw the sign and assumed the band's name was ‘Gomez’. The name stuck. After signing to Hut Records, they began recording their debut album, ‘Bring It On’, which saw them take the ’98 Mercury Music Prize and sales of the album went platinum.
